What is Shelter Services?

Shelter Services operates Tanner House in Providence, R.I., which provides safe, decent and affordable transitional housing for ten single
adults. Tanner House promotes self-sufficiency. Professional counseling services are provided on site to assist residents as needed with housing, health, employment, mental health, substance abuse and money issues.

Shelter Services, Inc. was
incorporated as a nonprofit organization is 1985 by a group of social workers, business people, volunteers, and community activists who were con-cerned about the critical needs of the homeless. A major goal of the group
was to create the first demonstration

model of affordable transitional housing for single men and women in Providence. Tanner House has been operating since 1990 to serve the needs of these men and women. The work of Tanner House is supported by donations and by funding from Rhode Island Housing and The Fund for Community Progress.
